How Often Should I Get an STI Test?

Dr Ibrar Ahmed MBChB MRCP MRCGP PhD 8 July 2026 5 min read

There is no single right answer to how often you should test for sexually transmitted infections — it depends on your situation, not on any judgement about your choices. Sexual health testing is a routine, sensible part of looking after yourself, much like checking your blood pressure or having a dental check-up. The aim of this guide is simply to help you decide what makes sense for you.

A sensible baseline for most people

If you are sexually active, a good general rule is to have a full STI screen at least once a year, even when you feel completely well. Many common infections cause no symptoms at all, so an annual check is the most reliable way to catch anything early and put your mind at rest.

Beyond that yearly baseline, the right frequency depends on a few practical factors that are worth thinking about honestly and without embarrassment.

When to test more frequently

Some circumstances make more regular testing a good idea. Consider getting checked:

Key takeaway: for most sexually active adults, an annual screen is a sensible minimum, moving to every three to six months if you have new or multiple partners. Testing is confidential and routine.

Do not wait for symptoms

It is a common misunderstanding that you only need a test if something feels wrong. In reality, chlamydia, gonorrhoea and several other infections are frequently silent. Testing without symptoms is not over-cautious — it is simply how these infections are most often found, and it is entirely normal to book a check purely for reassurance.

What testing involves

A screen is quick and low-key. Depending on the infections checked, it may involve a small blood sample, a urine sample or a self-taken swab. There is no need to explain your reasons to anyone, and your results are kept private. Most people find the process far easier and less awkward than they expected.

When to get tested

Book a screen if you have started seeing someone new, if it has been more than a year since your last check, if a partner has been diagnosed, or simply if you would feel better knowing. If you have symptoms such as unusual discharge, pain when passing urine, or sores, arrange a test sooner rather than later. Whatever the reason, getting checked is a positive, responsible step — never something to feel awkward about.
