How Much Does a Flu Jab Cost in the UK, and Who Gets It Free?

Dr Ibrar Ahmed MBChB MRCP MRCGP PhD 29 October 2026 5 min read
Quick answer: For the 2026 to 2027 season a private flu jab costs about £14 to £22 at supermarket and high-street pharmacies (Tesco £17, Boots £21.95) and £25 to £35 at a private GP clinic. At OneMedicine in Birmingham it is £25, given by a GP. It is free on the NHS if you are 65 or over, pregnant, in a clinical risk group, a young child or school pupil, a carer or a care home resident. If you qualify, book the free one; it is the same vaccine.

Every autumn I am asked two questions in the same breath: "how much is the flu jab?" and "can I get it free?" The second answer decides the first, so this guide starts with who the NHS vaccinates for nothing this winter, then gives the private prices, cheapest first, and what you are paying for when you choose a clinic over a supermarket.

Who gets a free NHS flu jab in 2026 to 2027

The NHS programme for England this season vaccinates the following groups free of charge. The eligibility list is unchanged from last year.

If you are in one of these groups you can have the vaccine at your GP surgery, at any pharmacy offering the NHS service, through your maternity service, or at school. There is nothing to pay. If you are not sure whether your condition counts, your GP practice or pharmacist can check in a minute.

Private flu jab prices, cheapest first

If you are not eligible, you pay. These are the published prices for the 2026 to 2027 season where the provider has announced one, and last season's price where it has not.

ProviderPriceNotes
Superdrugabout £14 to £20£19.95 last season, £9.95 with its loyalty card; 2026 price reported lower but not confirmed on its site
Asda£14.95Last season's price; 2026 figure not yet published
Tesco£172026 price, age 12 and over
Well Pharmacy£19.492026 price
Boots£21.952026 price (£26.95 in Jersey)
OneMedicine, Birmingham£25Given by a GP, from September; can be combined with any appointment
Other private GP clinics£25 to £35Typical range; hospital groups at the top

Pharmacy prices move during the season, and several chains run loyalty-card discounts, so check the booking page on the day. Workplace schemes often pay for the jab through a voucher, usually redeemed at one of the chains above.

What you get for paying more at a GP clinic

The vaccine is the same wherever you have it. What differs is the appointment around it. At a GP clinic you are seen by a doctor who can check that the vaccine is right for you if you have a complicated history, give it alongside a pneumonia, shingles or travel vaccine in one visit, and deal with anything else on your mind in the same appointment at the normal fee. At OneMedicine the flu jab is £25 on its own; add a GP appointment (£65 in clinic, £45 by phone or video) if you want one, and nothing if you do not. For a healthy adult who simply wants the jab, a pharmacy is cheaper and perfectly good.

When to have it

October or November is ideal. Protection takes about two weeks to build and lasts the season; flu usually peaks between December and February and runs into March, so a late jab is still worth having. Each year's vaccine is matched to the strains the World Health Organization expects to circulate, which is why last year's jab does not count.

Children

Children aged 2 to 16 are normally offered a nasal spray vaccine rather than an injection, free at school or at the GP surgery for the eligible ages. Children outside the NHS programme can have the nasal spray privately; ask the clinic for the current price, as it costs more than the adult injection.

Side effects and what to do after

A sore arm for a day or two is common, and some people feel tired or achy for 24 hours; that is the immune response, not flu, and the injected vaccine cannot give you flu because it contains no live virus. Paracetamol helps. You can drive, work and exercise as normal, and a drink in the evening does no harm, although a heavy night will make the next-day tiredness worse. Our guide on what to avoid after a flu jab covers the common questions.

Questions people ask

How much does a flu jab cost privately in the UK?

For the 2026 to 2027 season a private flu jab costs about £14 to £22 at the supermarket and high-street pharmacies (Tesco £17, Boots £21.95, with Asda and Superdrug usually a little cheaper) and £25 to £35 at a private GP clinic. At OneMedicine in Birmingham it is £25, given by a GP, available from September.

Can I get a flu jab for free in the UK?

Yes, if you are in an eligible group for the NHS programme: everyone aged 65 and over, adults aged 18 to 64 in a clinical risk group, pregnant women, children aged 2 and 3 on 31 August 2026, school children from reception to year 11, residents of care homes, carers, close contacts of people with weakened immune systems and frontline social care workers. Most others pay.

Where can I get a free NHS flu vaccine?

At your GP surgery, at a pharmacy that offers the NHS service (most large chains and many independents do), through your maternity service if you are pregnant, at school for children, or at a hospital appointment. Children's and pregnancy appointments open from 1 September, the over-65 and clinical risk groups from 1 October.

When is the best time to have a flu jab?

October or November. The vaccine takes about two weeks to give protection and flu usually peaks between December and February, so a jab in the autumn covers the whole season. Having it later is still worthwhile; flu circulates into March.

Is the private flu jab the same vaccine as the NHS one?

Yes. Private providers use the same licensed vaccines that the NHS buys for each age group, matched to the World Health Organization's strain recommendation for the season. Paying does not buy a better vaccine, only earlier or more convenient access.

Does the private flu jab price include a consultation?

At a pharmacy the price covers a short suitability check and the injection. At a GP clinic such as OneMedicine the £25 covers the same, given by a doctor, and you can add a GP appointment or other vaccines to the same visit at their listed prices.

Can I pay for a flu jab if I am eligible for a free one?

You can, and some people do to have it sooner or alongside another appointment, but there is no medical reason to. The NHS vaccine is the same product. If you qualify, book the free one.

Is a private flu jab worth the cost?

For a healthy adult who is not eligible for the NHS vaccine, £15 to £25 buys roughly a 40 to 60 per cent reduction in the chance of catching flu, fewer days off work and less risk of passing it to someone vulnerable. It is one of the better value things you can buy for your health each winter.
