What beta-hCG is

Blood test versus urine test
Both tests look for hCG, but they differ in a few important ways:
- Sensitivity — a blood test can detect lower levels of hCG, so it can confirm a pregnancy earlier.
- Precision — a blood test can give a numerical result rather than a simple yes or no.
- Timing — a blood test may turn positive a little sooner than a urine test around the time of a missed period.
Qualitative versus quantitative
There are two forms of the blood test. A qualitative test simply confirms whether hCG is present — a yes-or-no answer. A quantitative test measures the exact amount of hCG in your blood, which can be useful for tracking how a pregnancy is progressing when repeated over time.
